Festival of Lights to open with a Classic Idol

Davy JonesThe Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights is quickly gearing up for the 20th Anniversary season and is proud to announce who will perform following the opening ceremonies, Saturday June 24, 2006.

Davy Jones, formerly of The Monkees will bring his exceptional talent and showmanship to the Del Crary Stage.

Davy first invaded teen hearts as the international idol of millions in the hit 1960’s Emmy-Award winning television classic, The Monkees.  Since the show hit the small screen, he has triumphed as both a serious actor and a comedian on the theatrical stage; as a rock musician, composer and artist.

Davy is also an accomplished writer and humourous storyteller.  He recently completed the second edition of his autobiography, Davy Jones, Daydream Believin’, which updates his life and career to present.

Next week we reveal the June 28 and July 1 performers.  One is a festival favourite that we are proud to present and the other, a group of four of the finest musicians Canada has to offer.

More information on Davy Jones can be found at www.davyjones.net.

Canadian Treasures at Del Crary Park

The Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights is excited to unveil the next two performers on our list of outstanding 20th Anniversary entertainment.

John McDermott

Wednesday, June 28 will see the return of a classic festival artist, John McDermottJohn has proven time and again to be an exceptional balladeer and entertainer, incorporating both storytelling and song in his wonderful shows.  As any seasoned festival fan knows, this is one night not to be missed!

John McDermott’s meteoric rise to international stardom has become legendary in the music industry.  In a span of a few years, John has risen from an unknown to a million-selling solo artist, an essential part of the dynamic phenomenon The Irish Tenors, and a leading champion of veteran’s causes.

This week’s other featured artist is a quartet of Canada’s finest musicians.  Lunch at Allen’s will entertain the festival crowd on the much-anticipated Canada Day concert, July 1.  It all began as a regular get together at Allen's restaurant in Toronto with Canadian music icon Murray McLaughlin and old friends Ian Thomas and Marc Jordan. After adding the voice of Cindy Church, a "Lunch at Allen's" turned into an outstanding band who performs some of Canada's (and the worlds) most enjoyed songs from each of these songwriters’ impressive catalogues.

Lunch at Allen's

Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas' songs have been recorded by everyone from Rod Stewart to Bette Midler, and Diana Ross to Santana. Murray McLaughlin’s hits have covered Canadian airwaves from coast to coast. Cindy's voice and songs are well known on the folk festival circuit through her solo work and as a member of Quartette with Sylvia Tyson. Together, it seems as though they've been playing for years with an energy and freshness like they've just met. Each singer is accompanied by one another on a variety of instruments. Vocal harmonies, laughs and a few tall tales in between complete this exciting show.

Next week we reveal the July 5 and July 8  performances.  One is a mix between two exceptional styles of music and the other, a definite way to make the “Sweet City Women” happy.

The Board of Directors of the Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights is deeply saddened by the news of Fred Anderson's death and offers sincere condolences to his family and friends.

As the Founder of the Festival, Fred Anderson had an idea that came to light 20 years ago. It was Fred's vision, his drive and his dedication that made the Festival of Lights such a major part of the fabric of our community.

Until his retirement as Chairman two years ago, Fred did it all ... all the while building the foundation to ensure the Festival lives on. While he may have retired from the hectic day-to-day activities of the Festival, Fred remained on the Board as Past-Chair offering his guidance and expertise. He was also seen at every concert, most often out of the limelight, way at the back of the park ... just enjoying the music.

Fred Anderson the man will be greatly missed but his legacy to the Peterborough community will live on for many, many years to come through the Festival.

Final arrangements are being made by his family and are not complete at this time.

Sincerely,

Ron Johnston,
Board Chairman,
Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights Inc.

Final Four Festival Artists Announced

After weeks of anticipation and festival fans eagerly awaiting the lineup, the festival is pleased to announce who will grace our stage the last week of August as well as revealing 2 of the 4 "TBA's".

Sons of MaxwellAfter helping out the festival, opening for Doc Walker at the last minute in 2005, the festival is proud to welcome the Sons of Maxwell back to the stage on Wednesday, August 23.  With an impressive discography and performance resume, and several industry awards (including a 2006 East Coast Music Award), it can definitely be said that the Sons of Maxwell have come a long way from Northern Ontario.  With an impressive stage presence and songs that will leave the audience craving more, the Sons of Maxwell will bring their unique vocal harmonies back to the Del Crary Stage.

Harlem Gospel ChoirNext, after a stellar performance (and literal begging from festival audiences) in 2005, the Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights is excited and pleased to welcome the Harlem Gospel Choir to close our 20th Anniversary Season, on Saturday, August 26.  As many who were in attendance at the park last can tell – the show is an incredible mix of singing dancing and overall joy. The choir has shared their message of love, peace and harmony for many years with thousands of people from various nations, backgrounds and cultures.  The Harlem Gospel Choir strives to make the world a more loving and peaceful place through its music and dynamic performances.  Their songs of inspiration touch the depths of the soul and raise spirits to angelic heights.

Michael BurgessThe incredible Michael Burgess will take to the Del Crary stage on Saturday August 5 in what is sure to be a memorable performance.  Whether he’s starring in a major musical, performing in concert or appearing at world events for Queen Elizabeth or Mikhail Gorbachev, Michael Burgess touches the hearts and minds of listeners.

A Canadian star that has now crossed into the arena of recording artist, Burgess is accomplished in virtually every entertainment medium: television, film, recording and performance.
